Google Business Profile for Trades: What Actually Matters

Your Google Business Profile can be the difference between a phone that rings and one that does not. This guide covers the parts that actually matter for local trade businesses.

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that shows up in Google Maps and the local map pack at the top of search results. For a trade business, it is often the first thing a potential customer sees, sometimes before they even visit your website.

    Get the Basics Right

Before anything else, your profile needs to be accurate. Your business name, address, phone number and opening hours must match what is on your website exactly. Google uses this consistency to trust your business information.

If your website says one phone number and your profile says another, Google gets confused and so do your customers. Pick one set of details and use it everywhere.

    Choose the Right Primary Category

The primary category you choose is one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide what searches to show you for. A plumber should be listed as "Plumber", not "Contractor" or "Home improvement service".

Add secondary categories for the other services you offer, like "Gas engineer" or "Heating contractor", but keep the primary one specific to your main trade.

    List Every Service You Offer

Google lets you add a full list of services to your profile. Use it. Each service you add is another signal that helps Google match you to a relevant search.

Be specific. "Boiler repair", "powerflushing", "bathroom installation" and "emergency callout" are all better than a single generic "plumbing services" entry.

Photos Do More Than You Think

Photos of your actual work, your van, your team and completed jobs all help. They build trust with customers who are deciding whether to call you, and Google appears to factor photo activity into local ranking.

Avoid stock photos. Customers can tell, and a profile full of generic images makes you look less real, not more professional.

    Reviews Are the Big One

Of everything on your profile, reviews have the most visible impact. A business with a steady stream of recent, positive reviews will generally show up higher in local results than one with a few old ones.

Build a simple process for asking happy customers for a review. Send them a direct link. Make it part of your routine after every job. Do not buy reviews or offer incentives, because Google can detect that and it will hurt you.

    What to Ignore

Google posts, the short updates you can publish on your profile, are worth doing occasionally but are not a major ranking factor. Do not spend hours on them. The same goes for the messaging feature, which is useful but not essential.

Focus on the fundamentals: accurate information, the right categories, a full service list, real photos and a steady flow of genuine reviews. That is what actually moves the needle for a local trade business.
