Google Maps is where many local customers look first. This guide explains what actually affects your Maps ranking and what you can do to improve it.
When someone searches for a trade on their phone, Google Maps is often the first thing they see. The map pack at the top of search results, the three businesses with pins and reviews, is pulled from Google Maps. If you are not in that pack, you are missing a large chunk of local enquiries.
Google uses three main factors to decide which businesses show up in Maps:
You cannot always control distance, but you have significant influence over relevance and prominence. That is what this guide focuses on.
If you have not claimed your Google Business Profile, do it today. It is free. Go to business.google.com, search for your business, and follow the steps to verify it.
Once claimed, complete every section. An incomplete profile tells Google you are not bothered, and it tells customers the same thing.
The primary category is one of the strongest ranking signals. A plumber should be "Plumber", not "Contractor" or "Home improvement service". Be specific and accurate.
Add secondary categories for your other services, but keep the primary one focused on your main trade. Google uses this to decide which searches to show you for.
Google lets you add a full list of services. Use it. Each service is a signal that helps Google match you to relevant searches. "Boiler repair", "powerflushing", "bathroom installation" and "emergency callout" are all better than one generic "plumbing services" entry.
Tell Google exactly which areas you cover. List the towns, postcodes or regions you work in. This helps Google show you when someone searches from or for those areas.
Make sure your service areas match what is on your website. Consistency between your profile and your website is a signal Google uses.
Reviews are one of the most visible factors in Maps ranking. A business with forty recent, positive reviews will almost always show up higher than one with four old ones.
Ask every happy customer for a review. Send them a direct link to your review form so they do not have to hunt for it. Reply to every review. Do not buy reviews or offer incentives, because Google can detect that and it will hurt you.
Photos of your actual work, your van, your team and completed jobs all help. They build trust with customers, and Google appears to factor photo activity into local ranking. Regular new photos are better than a batch uploaded once and forgotten.
Do not use stock photos. Customers can tell, and a profile full of generic images makes you look less genuine.
Your business name, address and phone number must be the same everywhere. On your Google profile, on your website, on Yell, on FreeIndex, everywhere. If Google sees different phone numbers or addresses in different places, it is less confident about your business, and that can hurt your ranking.
Google Posts are the short updates you can publish on your profile. They are not a major ranking factor, but they keep your profile active and show customers you are operating. Post about new services, special offers or recent jobs. A few posts a month is enough.
Google Maps ranking is not just about your profile. Your website plays a role too. A website with proper service pages, location pages and structured data reinforces to Google that you are a relevant, active local business.
If your website is a single homepage with no local SEO structure, it is not helping your Maps ranking. A properly structured website works together with your profile to build your local presence.
Nobody can guarantee you a specific position on Google Maps. If someone tells you they can get you to number one, they are not being honest. What you can do is give yourself the best possible chance by completing your profile, collecting reviews, adding photos and keeping everything consistent.
