What Makes a Good Trade Website

A trade website should do more than look nice. It needs to get you found, build trust and turn visitors into enquiries. Here is what actually matters.

Plenty of trade websites look fine. They have a logo, a few photos and a contact form. But looking fine and actually bringing in work are two different things. A good trade website is built to generate enquiries, not just to exist.

    Clear Service Information

The most basic requirement is that a customer can immediately see what you do. Not a vague list on one page, but clear, dedicated pages for each service. If you do boiler repairs, bathroom installations and powerflushing, each one gets its own page.

This helps customers find exactly what they need, and it helps Google understand what searches to send your way. One homepage that mentions everything does neither job well.

    Areas Covered

Customers want to know if you cover their area before they bother calling. Make your service areas obvious. List the towns and postcodes you work in, and if you cover several distinct areas, build proper location pages for each one.

Do not just list thirty towns in your footer. That looks spammy and does not help. Be specific about where you actually work.

    Click-to-Call and WhatsApp

Most of your visitors are on a phone. Make it one tap to call you. A sticky call button at the top of every page, visible without scrolling. A WhatsApp link for customers who prefer to message.

Every barrier between the customer and the enquiry costs you work. A contact form buried on a separate page is a barrier. A phone number in the footer that you have to copy and paste is a barrier. Remove them.

    Enquiry Forms That Work

Not everyone wants to call. Some prefer to fill in a form, especially for non-urgent work. Have a short, simple enquiry form on your contact page and ideally on key service pages too. Name, phone, what they need. Nothing more.

Long forms with mandatory email addresses, postcodes and "how did you hear about us" dropdowns just reduce the number of people who fill them in. Keep it short.

    Reviews and Social Proof

When a stranger lands on your website, they are deciding within seconds whether to trust you. Genuine Google reviews are the strongest trust signal you can show. Link to your Google reviews, or embed a few on your site.

Accreditations matter too. Gas Safe, NICEIC, Checkatrade, Which? Trusted Trader. Whatever you have, show it. It tells customers you are legit and insured.

    Real Project Photos

Photos of your actual work build trust and show the quality of what you do. Before and after shots are particularly powerful for trades like kitchens, bathrooms, landscaping and windows.

Do not use stock photos. Customers can tell, and a site full of generic images makes you look less real, not more professional. A photo of a job you actually did is worth a hundred stock images.

    Mobile Usability

Over three quarters of trade searches happen on a phone. Your website needs to work properly on mobile, not just be visible on one. That means fast loading, text you can read without zooming, buttons big enough to tap, and no horizontal scrolling.

If your website is slow and fiddly on a phone, customers will leave before they even see what you do. Mobile is not an afterthought. For most trades, it is where most of your visitors are.

    Fast Loading

Speed matters. If your site takes more than a couple of seconds to load, a good chunk of visitors will leave. On mobile, with a weak signal, it is even worse.

Fast loading comes from good hosting, optimised images, minimal heavy scripts and a technical setup done properly. It is not something you can fix by clicking a button in a DIY builder.

    Local SEO Structure

A good trade website is built to be found. That means service pages, location pages, proper headings, structured data and a Google Business Profile that matches. Without this, your site might look good but nobody will see it.

    Clear Calls to Action

Every page should have an obvious next step. Call us. Get a quote. Book online. Enquire. Do not leave the customer wondering what to do next. A clear call to action on every page turns more visitors into enquiries.

The Difference Between Looking Nice and Working

A website can look beautiful and do nothing. It can win design awards and never generate a single enquiry. A good trade website is not about aesthetics alone. It is about getting found, building trust and making it easy to get in touch. If yours does not do all three, it is not doing its job.
