Local SEO is how trade businesses get found by customers searching in their area. This guide explains what actually matters, without the jargon and the agency fluff.
If you run a trade business, most of your customers are not searching nationally. They are searching for a plumber, a roofer or an electrician in their town. Local SEO is how you make sure your business shows up when they do.
Local SEO is the process of making your website and your Google Business Profile show up when someone searches for a service in your area. It is different from general SEO because it focuses on geographic relevance, not just topic relevance.
When someone searches "boiler repair Hull", Google tries to show local businesses that do boiler repairs in Hull. Your job is to make it obvious to Google that you are one of them.
The biggest mistake trade websites make is putting all their services on one page. A homepage that says "we do plumbing, heating and bathrooms" does not tell Google which of those searches to rank you for.
Instead, you need a dedicated page for each service. A boiler repair page, a bathroom installation page, a leak detection page. Each page targets one specific search and gives Google a clear signal about what you do.
You also need to show Google where you work. This does not mean creating a thin page for every town in Yorkshire with the same content and a different name swapped in. That is doorway spam and it can hurt you.
It means creating genuine, useful pages for the areas you actually cover. If you work across Hull, Beverley and Cottingham, build pages that explain what you do in each area and why local customers should call you. Make the content real, not a template.
Your Google Business Profile is one of the most important parts of local SEO. It is what shows up in the map pack at the top of local search results.
Make sure your profile is complete and accurate. Choose the right primary category, add all the services you offer, list your service areas, upload photos of your work, and keep your business information consistent with what is on your website.
Google reviews are a major local ranking factor. Businesses with more recent, positive reviews tend to show up higher in local search results.
The best approach is to ask every happy customer for a review. Make it easy by sending them a direct link to your Google review page. Do not buy reviews or offer discounts in exchange for them. Google can spot that and it will hurt you.
Local SEO also depends on your website being technically sound. That means:
Local SEO is not instant. A brand new website in a competitive area might take several months to start showing up consistently. A well-structured site in a less competitive area can see results faster.
The key is to build the foundations properly from the start and then keep improving over time. Add new service pages, update your Google Business Profile, collect reviews and keep your content fresh. Local SEO is ongoing, not a one-off job.
If all of this sounds like a lot of work, it is. That is why most trade businesses either ignore local SEO entirely or pay someone who does not understand their trade to do it badly.
