    Why Trades Need Local SEO

Most of your customers are searching for a trade in their area, not nationally. Local SEO is how you make sure they find you instead of the firm down the road.

When someone needs a plumber, an electrician or a roofer, they do not search nationally. They search for someone nearby. "Boiler repair Hull", "electrician near me", "roof leak Beverley". If your business does not show up for those searches, you are invisible to the people most likely to actually call you.

    What Local SEO Actually Does

Local SEO is the process of making your business show up when people search for a service in your area. It is different from general SEO because it focuses on geographic relevance. Google tries to show businesses that are close to the searcher and relevant to what they are looking for.

For trades, this is usually the most important type of SEO. A national ranking for "boiler repair" is useless if you only work in Hull. A local ranking for "boiler repair Hull" puts you in front of someone who can actually become a customer.

    Where Local Customers Find You

There are three main places local customers look:

    • The map pack at the top of Google search results, which pulls from Google Business Profiles
    • Local organic results below the map pack, which come from your website
    • Google Maps directly, especially on mobile when people are out and about

Local SEO works on all three. Your Google Business Profile feeds the map pack and Maps. Your website feeds the organic results. Both need to be set up properly.

Why It Matters More for Trades Than Most Businesses

Trades are inherently local. A plumber in Hull is not competing with a plumber in Leeds. You are competing with the other plumbers in your town, and the one who shows up first in local search gets the call.

It is also urgent. When a boiler breaks down in January, the customer does not spend an hour researching. They search, they call the first couple of businesses that look reputable, and they book. If you are not there, you lose that job.

    The Building Blocks

Local SEO for trades comes down to a few core things:

    • A properly optimised Google Business Profile with the right categories, services and photos
    • A website with dedicated service pages and location pages
    • Consistent business information (name, address, phone) everywhere online
    • A steady flow of genuine Google reviews
    • A website that loads fast on mobile and makes it easy to enquire

None of this is complicated in principle, but most trade businesses either do not do it or do it badly. A website that looks fine but has no local SEO structure is like a van with no signwriting. It works, but nobody knows you are there.

What Local SEO Does Not Do

Local SEO will not make you rank number one overnight. It will not guarantee a specific position. It will not bring in work if your service is poor or your prices are uncompetitive. What it does is put you in front of the right people at the right moment. The rest is up to you.

    Getting Started

If you have never thought about local SEO, start with your Google Business Profile. Make sure it is complete and accurate. Then look at your website and ask whether it has proper service pages and mentions the areas you cover. If not, that is your first job.
